Hi, my name is Katie and I am a proud 90’s baby. I was born and bred in Milton Keynes, England. I have been modelling full time since 2010, which led me to an interest in fitness and nutrition. Over recent years, it has become apparent to me just how destructive our food industry can be, so between wanting to have the best, most nutritious ingredients for cooking, and my concern for the welfare of the planet, I was left with the desire to do my little bit and start growing my own food.
I first got an allotment in May 2019, after 6 months on the waitlist. I started with a half plot – which seemed pretty daunting at first – but within months I found myself wanting more growing space. Since then, I have given up our original half plot and now have 1.5 full size plots of growing space. My dream is to one day have my own piece of land and to be as close as self-sufficient as possible.
Seeing the impact that food has on the planet, from its carbon footprint, toxic chemicals leaching into our rivers and oceans, pesticides killing our pollinators and the very real threat that our soils will be entirely depleted within the next few decades fuels me with desire to grow my own food in an organic way that promotes biodiversity and looks after the planet. I believe that everyone who has their own land has a responsibility to look after it and utilise it to its full potential. I am a big fan of the grow food not lawns movement.
I feel like I have come a long way in the short time that I have been growing my own food, and while I will openly admit that I am far from being an expert, I feel that I have learned a lot on my journey and wish to inspire and help others in starting theirs.
